My reasons for never buying meat again

1. Environmental

Eating meat causes almost 40 per cent more greenhouse-gas emissions than all the cars, trucks, ships and planes in the world combined.

Primary cause of greenhouse effect: carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels. fossil fuels needed to produce meat-centered diet vs. a meat-free diet: 3 times more . Percentage of U.S. topsoil lost to date: 75. Percentage of U.S. topsoil loss directly related to livestock raising: 85

Number of acres of U.S. forest cleared for cropland to produce meat-centered diet: 260 million. Area of tropical rainforest consumed in every quarter-pound of rainforest beef: 55 sq. feet. Current rate of species extinction due to destruction of tropical rainforests for meat grazing and other uses: 1,000 per year.

It takes 3 to 15 times as much water to produce animal protein as it does plant protein.

Almost all meat comes in plastic or Styrofoam packaging that can not be recycled.

2. Personal Health

Vegetarians live six to 10 years longer on average than meat-eaters do. Healthy vegetarian diets support a lifetime of good health and provide protection against numerous diseases and the three biggest killers – heart disease, cancer and strokes.

According to the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, “Vegetarians are about 40 percent less likely to get cancer than non-vegetarians, regardless of other risks such as smoking, body size, and socioeconomic status”

There is no nutrient necessary for optimal human functioning which cannot be obtained from plant food.

Wholesome food travels quickly through the “G.I” tract, leaving little time to spoil and incite disease within the body.

Average cholesterol level of people eating meat-centered-diet: 210 mg/dl. Chance of dying from heart disease if you are male and your blood cholesterol level is 210 mg/dl: greater than 50 percent.

There are over 20,000 different drugs, including sterols, antibiotics, growth hormones and other veterinary drugs that are given to livestock animals. These drugs are consumed when animal foods are consumed. The dangers herein, in secondary consumption of antibiotics, are well documented.

3. Ethics & Morals

Number of animals killed for meat per hour in the U.S.: 660,000.
Occupation with the highest turnover rate in U.S.: slaughterhouse worker.
Occupation with the highest rate of on-the-job-injury in U.S.: slaughterhouse worker

On today’s factory farms, animals are crammed by the thousands into filthy windowless sheds, wire cages, gestation crates and other confinement systems. These animals will never raise families, root in the soil, build nests or do anything that is natural and important to them.

Eating meat supports killing animals just to satisfy humans’ acquired taste for flesh.

Food is the source of the body’s chemistry, and what we ingest affects our consciousness, emotions and experiential pattern. If we want to live in higher consciousness, in peace and happiness and love for all creatures, then we should consider not eating meat, fish, shellfish or fowl.

I do not want to show support of the meat industry and the way they operate by purchasing their products.

I love animals, all of them. I have no desire to slaughter them or attempt to kill them in a “humane” fashion. Eating meat directly supports their deaths which is unnecessary to my survival.

4. Worldwide Hunger

Number of people worldwide who will die as a result of malnutrition this year: 20 million.
Number of people who could be adequately fed using land freed if Americans reduced
their intake of meat by 10%: 100 million.
Percentage of corn grown in the U.S. eaten by livestock: 80.
Percentage of oats grown in the U.S. eaten by livestock: 95.
How frequently a child dies as a result of malnutrition: every 2.3 seconds.
Pounds of potatoes that can be grown on an acre: 40,000.
Pounds of beef produced on an acre: 250.
Percentage of U.S. farmland devoted to beef production: 56.
Pounds of grain and soybeans needed to produce a pound of beef: 16.

If I continue to support the meat industry, I continue to support worldwide famine.

IF ANYONE WOULD LIKE MORE REASONS, STATISTICS, FACTS OR INFORMATION OF ANY KIND, JUST ASK. THIS IS NOWHERE NEAR A COMPLETE LIST OF REASONS WHY TO AVOID BUYING MEAT 🙂
