When Life Hands You Lemons…

Make Lemon-aide! Or whatever you fancy…

I had my less than 3 month old Blackberry stolen yesterday while I was grocery shopping with my 2 girls at Superstore. My 4 yr old and I were making teamwork of the bulk bins and my 5 month old was laying in the stroller as usual. My phone was laying in my cup holder, as usual… and then it was gone. I’ve had a pretty sad 24 hours realizing that I’m never getting it back and that it’s going to cost me a tonne to replace it. I shed a lot of tears over it, how much I had on it that I’ve lost forever (pictures/videos of my kids, all my contact info, etc) and how attached I was to it and have been feeling naked without it. I’ve decided that the cost is not worth it anymore, so I won’t be replacing it at all. I’ve had a cell phone for over 10 years straight now and each year I have become more and more dependent and attached to it and less focused on what is really important. There are also tonnes of studies about how horrible mobile phones are for our health and of course the planet as well, so I can just chalk it up to being more eco-friendly than I already am. I’m getting this deep feeling inside of me that maybe this was fate, letting me know that my time of relying on an device for relationships, information and security is over. My choices are to cancel the contract (3 months shy of 3 years remaining!!) and pay the penalty of over 400$, making my pay out over $600, or lower the plan down to a minimum and continue paying monthly, which I will be penalized for as well since I have to downgrade my plan, so an extra $122 fine for that. Each option sucks, financially, and is horrible considering the circumstances. The cheapest is to lower the plan down and continue paying, so that’s what I’ll do, and in 3 years from now I will be free!ย

In slightly more positive news, I recieved my first CSA box of fresh, local, organic, unpackaged produce today. Everything looks so great and I am so thankful that I signed up for this program! 22 weeks of produce delivered to my house, yay me! If you’d like to see what was in my box and read more about the program and Pitchfork Organic Farm, please do!ย

Also, I just signed up for the 30×30 Challenge from David Suzuki! It’s not something that will be hard for me at all, considering my lifestyle lol. But I am looking forward to making a conscious effort to get outside every single day and to take pictures and hold myself accountable for it. And hey, maybe I’ll even win something cool ๐Ÿ˜›ย

Below is the latest “Clean Team” effort (that is my 4 yr old and I’s name for ourselves when hunting for garbage) that we did 2 days ago. We’ll be going out again tomorrow if it’s not raining! Hope whoever is reading this is starting to pick up those abandoned coffee cups, cigarette packages and candy wrappers that you used to just walk right past. Remember, just because you didn’t drop it, doesn’t mean you can’t set a good example and pick it up! It’s your world too! โคย

A few pics to get you thinking…

1 month anniversary!

I am going to give myself a huge self pat on the back ๐Ÿ™‚ I have made it over a month of being a vegetarian and am loving it. I am not tempted at all to go back to meat, it disgusts me and hurts my heart to think about killing animals for food now that I know I don’t have to. MEAT IS NOT GREEN :p โคย

Also, it’s been about a month now since we started using cloth diapers! Have not caved and bought any new disposables at all and I doubt I ever will. I had 2 unopened packs of size 3 diapers given to me by friends and when I attended a gender reveal party on the weekend, I gave them to my other friend who was requesting diapers. So, all in all, hooray for cloth and doing laundry on a daily basis LOL and hooray for one less item on the grocery list and making my footprint greener!ย

Next week I think I will check out Karmavore, a vegan store/restaurant and take part in the “Meatless Mondays” Potluck. Sounds like a fun way to try new food, meet new people and have dinner for free!ย

Below is a picture that I would like everyone to think about next time they use their “Ipad” or like item… I don’t personally own one and never will.ย Image

Compilation of “Green” products, sites, etc!

Over the past month or so, since I started on this journey, people have been sending me info about green and eco friendly products and such whenever they come across them. I figured it would be nice to share them all with you, my faithful blog viewers ๐Ÿ˜›ย

HOME MADE REUSABLE BABY WIPES!! I will be doing this as soon as I run out of my disposables ๐Ÿ™‚

GARDEIN – MEAT FREE FOOD THAT’S ACTUALLY TASTY ๐Ÿ™‚ I have heard good things and will definitely try it someday soon ๐Ÿ™‚ย

ANTI-PLASTIC TOYS!ย ย – Zoe B Biodegradable Toys! Sound really neat, check them out!ย

GREEN LUNCH KITS! – If I can’t find something locally, I will definitely be investing in some of these. So awesome.ย

GARDENING TIPS – For easy, organic gardening. I’m just working on my green thumb for the first time ๐Ÿ˜€ย

DAIYA VEGAN CHEESE – I have actually tried this before and it’s good. You wouldn’t think a vegan cheese would be but it is surprisingly yummy ๐Ÿ™‚ย

GUM IS PLASTIC?! – Read this article by one of my hero’s, Beth Terry, and you might reconsider gum chewing. I know I will never buy gum again!! Her whole website rocks and I am in the process of purchasing a signed copy of her book, PLASTIC FREE!! ๐Ÿ˜€ย

PEAPODS NATURAL BABY CARE/TOYS – looks like a great company with lots of eco-friendly options!ย

BECOTHINGS – Biodegradable pottys anyone? This is definitely the GREEN way to go ๐Ÿ˜›ย

ZERO WASTE – This lady should be an inspiration to us all. I doubt I’ll ever get things down to her level of wastelessness but we can always try!!ย

HOMEMADE SHAMPOO – This website is great. These recipes look easy and I’m really looking forward to trying them out soon ๐Ÿ˜€ย

And that’s all for now. I probably missed a tonne but I’m tired and want to get off of the computer lol. Below is a picture that a friend said made her think of me. I’ll take that as a compliment ๐Ÿ™‚ โค

Happy BELATED “Green” Mother’s Day!

So as I get sidetracked by my ADHD, children and trying to save the world… I totally forgot to wish all of my eco-friendly mom viewers a happy mother’s day!ย

To celebrate my 5th mother’s day (yes, I celebrated my 1st while I was pregnant with my 1st!!) we went to the beach for the first time since last summer! It was such a lovely day. We bussed it there and back. Brought our own drinks and snacks and bags to pick up garbage on the beach. We had lunch at my favorite Greek place and I ate a yummy vegetarian platter and then we got ice cream cones at the home made/local place Cones Creamery! Sooo yummy. Later I was fortunate enough to get to teach my 4 year old about all kinds of wildlife that we found living under the pier. We were very gentle and made sure to put everything back where we found it after a short period of examining. We even tried to save some crabs from some hillbilly “fishermen” by telling them that they were too small, polluted, or not in season. They didn’t listen, of course, and were like talking to a bunch of drunken, slow, brick walls. My 4 year old was very unimpressed but I had the discussion about how we can only make our own choices and other people will do what they want, so she let it go and we moved on with our day ๐Ÿ™‚ย

For actual mothers day Sunday, I received a yummy vegetarian breakfast in bed and some lovely non plastic gifts! I got the new Sookie Stackhouse (True Blood) book that just came out, a big blown up picture of my 2 girls and a colour changing mug with a picture of my girls on it. So thoughtful! (I think someone is thinking ahead to fathers day!!!) After that we all went out to Value Village and I got a bunch of summer clothes. Hubby wanted to take me somewhere where I could get new stuff but I’m determined to get used rather than new whenever possible from now on ๐Ÿ™‚ Then we had some yummy vegetarian subs from Subway for lunch and headed home. It was an awesome weekend!!!ย

I hope everyone else was either spoiled or spoiled their moms ๐Ÿ™‚ Don’t forget to boycott the Cloverdale Rodeo this weekend. Say no to animal cruelty!!ย

Below is a picture of my old BBQ turned into a planter ๐Ÿ™‚ My radish sprouts are really getting big!ย

Be The Change!!

I find myself with less and less time to write with 2 kids and being eco-friendly! I promise to at least update weekly ๐Ÿ™‚ย

We have planted some seeds in our “garden” recently and will be getting some pots and hanging planters for our balconies for doing more veggies ๐Ÿ™‚ So far our radish sprouts are coming in awesome and the basil is coming up too! I am going to keep trying to develop my “green” thumb, but it’s definitely a work in progress.ย

Today my 4 year old and I set out on a mission to fill 5 bags with garbage and were able to finish within an hour! Amazing and very sad… I hate that there is enough garbage in my city to fill so many bags so quickly and easily. I have to hope that the more we pick it up, the more other people will be inspired to do the same.ย

I’ve found a few groups, blogs and pages that are share-worthy.ย

One is a facebook group that I’m very fond of, despite the name that might not be so user friendly lol. Give A Shit About Natureย is dedicated to spreading awareness and inspiring change. Go check it out!ย

Another is a fellow eco-friendly mom blogger that my best friend told me about. She’s an inspiration and is involved in all kinds of awesomeness that is great for the planet. The Sustainable Parent is her blog, definitely worth reading!ย

The other is a site where you can become more aware about different petitions, causes and organizations that are making a difference. I found it when I was directed by the Sea Shepherd Society facebook page to help Captain Paul Watson hopefully avoid being imprisoned. There are all kinds of great petitions you can sign and make your voice heard! Here’s the linkย http://www.care2.comย ๐Ÿ™‚ย

Anyhow, I am going to get off of here and get back to my kids! Below is a pic of our garbage hunt today ๐Ÿ™‚ย

“Cleaning up our world”

So our mission is pretty much to leave places nicer than how we found them. My 4 year old daughter and I are quite the clean team these days. She gets extremely pumped up about collecting garbage and isn’t afraid to get mad at people for littering if she sees it. She makes me very proud!! We’ve collected 3 overstuffed fabric bags full of garbage in the past 2 days from just around our neighborhood and we always ran out of room in our bag before we were done. It’s disgusting how much people litter and has bothered me for years!!! I’m so glad to not just be whining about it anymore and actually doing something about it. She said to me today as we were walking home, “Mommy, I’m glad we’re cleaning up our world.”ย

In other news, my home made deodorant is working AWESOME and I’m never going back to plastic packaged, chemically ridden deodorants ever again ๐Ÿ™‚ Looking very forward to making my own toothpaste next, lotion, lip balm and household cleaners! Just waiting for my old ones to run out as I can’t bare to waste them, then it’s go time ๐Ÿ™‚ Also, I have only about a month left worth of shampoo/conditioner left and then my daughter and I are getting our hair cut to our shoulders and doing the “No Poo!” Very excited ๐Ÿ™‚ย

Tomorrow is our 4th delivery and I’m extra pumped about it because they will be picking up a bunch of donations for the Downtown Eastside Women’s Center from me. Giving to charity is MASSIVELY important to me and although I’m not able to financially donate on a regular basis, giving material items that I’ve accumulated over the years is never a problem. The bra drive for African ladies that I took part in a few weeks ago was a major success as well! Just myself and a few moms from my parent’s group were able to get over 90 bras together to be shipped to Africa! MOM POWER โคย

Home Made Deodorant & Other Adventures

Today my best friend came over and helped me make deodorant. It was so easy and I’ve been wearing it for about 10 hours now and am still feeling fresh ๐Ÿ™‚ Here’s how you do it!

1/4 cup baking soda, 1/4 cup corn starch, 2 tablespoons coconut oil, 20+ drops of your preferred essential oil.ย

add the baking soda, corn starch and coconut oil into a bowl and mix until it starts getting smooth and pasty. add in the essential oil to make it smell nice, i used red mandarin. mix well. transfer into your glass/metal container (I used baby food jars). DONE! ย

you just apply it to your armpits like you would with any lotion, and it’s that easy! here’s the link to the online tutorial!

Today my second child turned 4 months old and to celebrate we used the last of the disposable diapers in our house and are 100% cloth diapering from here on out! Yay!! Also, once we run out of wipes we will be using cloths and water instead. This could take awhile tho as I have half a box of Costco wipes/packages left lol.

We have been forgoing baby shampoo/wash completely now for about 2 weeks and only using oatmeal/coconut oil baths for the baby. I’m hoping her skin will clear up soon and I won’t have to make even more drastic diet changes than I already have!ย

Last but not least, today we got signed up for our weekly CSA box from Pitchfork Organic Farm! ย I am SO excited to be getting fresh, organic, local produce delivered to my door every week starting at the end of this month ๐Ÿ™‚ The owner, Jeremy, seems like such an awesome guy and has been very accommodating since I first inquired about getting the CSA box. I think they are all booked up and have no spots left for this year, but there are a few other local farms that have CSA boxes available so if you’re interested, check it out with your trusty friend google!ย

Below is a picture that my lovely and like minded friend posted the other day which inspires me to continue sharing my “green” changes with others and not get let down by those who don’t care or think I’m crazy ๐Ÿ˜›ย

Shopping “Green”

I wish I had more time to write here, but after I spent over an hour writing up an awesome blog last night only to have my browser crash and lose it all, I am fed up and am going to simplify it.ย

What I have been doing to save as much unneeded packaging as possible:

Only buying loose produce items. If it comes in plastic packaging, don’t get it. It pisses me off that I want to get the organic lemons but they come in a plastic netted bag. I bought the normal lemons instead. I always buy local and organic products whenever I possibly can. It’s hard to get things that are unpackaged, local and organic… it seems that you usually have to pick only 1 or 2 of those options. Just do your best and try to get it all loose and use no plastic bags at all.ย

Bring your own containers and bags. I bring my old plastic bulk bin bags from my previous life, rather than just throw them out, I am re-using them until they all get holes and are not useful anymore. I transfer everything to metal/glass containers when I get home. Bring fabric bags and refuse all plastic bags wherever you go.ย

Go to the deli counter and ask for cheeses, etc without packaging and put them in your own containers. They can just print you off the label/barcode. Do the same at the bakery section. I was able to get cheese and bread without plastic packaging at Superstore and I’m sure it would be just as easy if not easier to do it at other stores.ย

Avoid all of the isles except ones that you abosolutely need and read labels!!! Make sure you are buying products that are at least made in Canada and even better, in BC.ย

Walk to and from grocery shopping. If you have a stroller, use it to put your groceries in. If you don’t, get a little pushcart. I used to take the bus to the store sometimes and cab home, but now I walk both ways and won’t ever do it any other way from now on. It’s the greenest thing you can do!ย

I had so much more to say and had it written out so well but I’m exhausted and tired so I’ll write more soon-ish.ย
